Research
CAN SILENCE STILL BE PRIVATE?
Our everyday silences, including looking away, not responding and covering our faces, are often translated by digital systems into meaningful signals. This research explores how silence, once a personal boundary, is increasingly interpreted, inferred and monetized.
Inferred silence
Intent from simple actions.
When a pause or glance becomes a psychological claim.
Ambient silence
Presence as a data source.
When merely entering a space makes the body readable.

Eight passers-by were recorded. Four representative cases show how quickly a simple gesture becomes a claim about intent.

The difference was not whether meaning was inferred, but how confidently that inference was formalised and recorded.

To make this invisible process of inference tangible, I translated it into a physical encounter—one in which presence, distance and touch could be captured and returned as judgment.

The installation measures distance and pressure, derives proximity, dwell and contact, then returns those limited states as confident judgment.
Form Development
The structure evolved from three metaphors: an eye that scans, a net that captures and a cage that encloses. The object acts as both an instrument and a sensory organ: receiving weak signals, processing them and speaking back with borrowed authority.
Eye
The gyroscope recalls a radar or mechanical lens: always scanning, always waiting.
Net
One thread is almost invisible. Woven densely, individual silences become a system of capture.
Cage
Warm bamboo craft holds a cold surveillance logic: a cage made by people, not a distant machine.
BUILT
BY HAND.
DESIGNED
TO WATCH.
Bamboo, thread and electronics were assembled into a structure that feels handmade while behaving like a sensor.
Mechanism
Steam-bent bamboo rings create a suspended gyroscopic frame that can rotate while keeping the sensing surface within reach.
Material
Blue and white thread makes a dense capture surface while keeping the object visually light.
Integration
Distance and pressure sensors are placed directly on the frame before the final structure is balanced.

The Experience
One short encounter moves from passive presence to confident classification.
Dormancy
The installation hangs in a static state, waiting for a presence to awaken it.

Entering the detection zone shifts the system from sleep to alert mode.

Interacting triggers pressure sensors to record the intensity of touch.
Spatial Input
The approach triggers distance sensors, capturing gestures without physical contact.
AI Feedback
The OLED screen and audio output reveal the AI interpretation of non-verbal signals.

Stepping away severs the connection, resetting the installation to silence.

Passivity did not prevent interpretation.
In post-experience reflections, participants described feeling measured and judged even when they avoided deliberate interaction. Distance, dwell and contact were still translated into meaning.
